How federal holidays and observed days work
The eleven federal holidays are written into law at 5 U.S.C. 6103. Six fall on a set weekday: Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Birthday is the third Monday of January (January 18 in 2027), Washington's Birthday the third Monday of February (February 15), Memorial Day the last Monday of May (May 31), Labor Day the first Monday of September (September 6), Columbus Day the second Monday of October (October 11) and Thanksgiving the fourth Thursday of November (November 25). Those can never land on a weekend.
The other five have fixed dates: New Year's Day, Juneteenth (June 19), Independence Day (July 4), Veterans Day (November 11) and Christmas (December 25). When one falls on a Saturday, federal employees get the Friday before; on a Sunday, the Monday after. 2027 is an unusually busy year for that rule:
- Juneteenth is a Saturday, so the day off is Friday, June 18.
- Independence Day is a Sunday, so the day off is Monday, July 5. Fireworks still happen on the 4th.
- Christmas is a Saturday, so the day off is Friday, December 24, Christmas Eve.
- New Year's Day 2028 is a Saturday too, so OPM puts its holiday on Friday, December 31, 2027. It counts toward 2028's eleven, which is why this calendar shades 12 days in 2027.
The grid shades the observed day, because that is when offices close. "Washington's Birthday" is the name the law uses; most calendars and stores call it Presidents' Day, and as the third Monday of February it always falls between February 15 and 21, so never on Washington's actual birthday, February 22.
Who actually gets these days off
Federal holidays bind federal agencies and the District of Columbia. Post offices close, there is no regular mail delivery, and federal courts are shut. Beyond that, nothing obliges anyone: each state sets its own public holidays (some skip Columbus Day or call it Indigenous Peoples' Day, some add days such as César Chávez Day or Patriots' Day), and no federal law requires a private employer to give paid holidays at all.
Banks and markets keep their own calendars. The Federal Reserve does not move a Saturday holiday to the Friday, so many banks are open on June 18, December 24 and December 31, 2027; ask your bank. The New York Stock Exchange closes on Good Friday (March 26, 2027), which is not a federal holiday, and stays open on Columbus Day and Veterans Day.
Printing on US Letter
This page starts on US Letter (8.5 × 11 in), landscape, with weeks starting on Sunday as US wall calendars do. Download the PDF and, in the print dialog, choose Actual size or Scale 100%; "Fit to page" only shrinks the sheet a little for no gain. The year grid stays about 0.45 in (11 to 12 mm) from every edge, more than the 0.12 to 0.25 in a home inkjet or laser cannot reach, so nothing is clipped, and the page fits a standard 8.5 × 11 frame.
For a wall planner keep the whole year on one page; for the fridge choose A month per page in portrait, where each day cell is about 1.1 in wide with the holiday's name printed in it, and you can add your own photo to each month without it leaving your device. The address keeps your choices, so ?layout=month&orient=portrait opens the monthly version directly and ?paper=a4 switches to A4 for printing abroad.
Honest limits
Only the federal list is marked: no state holidays, no school breaks, and no observances that are not days off, such as Mother's Day, Halloween or Election Day (Election Day is a holiday in some states, not federally). OPM publishes its schedule through 2030, so ?year=2028 to ?year=2030 mark OPM's dates too; for later years the maker uses the statute's rules and says so. A one-off closing by executive order, like the extra Christmas Eve days off some presidents have granted, is announced late and will not appear here. The main 2027 calendar maker has the same tool with UK, German, Spanish, French, Canadian, Australian and Mexican holidays, and the UK bank holidays page lists all three British nations side by side.
How a long weekend is counted
A long weekend here is any run of three or more days off in a row made only of Saturdays, Sundays and the public holidays this calendar marks for your country (and region, if you pick one). Nothing else counts: a day the source does not list is a working day, no “observed” day is added that the source does not state, and a holiday marked for part of a day only (Queensland’s Christmas Eve, from 6 pm) does not join a run. In England and Wales, Good Friday (26 March 2027) and Easter Monday (29 March) make one four-day run; the other 2027 bank holidays are Mondays, giving three-day weekends, and the substitute days for Christmas make Saturday 25 to Tuesday 28 December four days.
Bridge days are suggestions, not holidays. A bridge day is an ordinary working day between a holiday and a weekend. Take Friday 7 May 2027 off in Germany, after Ascension Day (Christi Himmelfahrt) on Thursday 6 May, and you are off Thursday to Sunday: four days for one day of leave. Two days of leave are listed when they give five or more days off, and three only when they join two weekends — Wednesday 29 to Friday 31 December in England and Wales turn into ten days, Saturday 25 December to Monday 3 January 2028 (the New Year substitute day). A bridge day is never coloured on the grid or in the PDF. Tick Mark long weekends (or add lw=1 to the link) to draw a dashed outline round every run on the sheet and in each PDF layout; month pages also print each run under that month’s holidays.
