New Zealand's public holidays in 2027
The Holidays Act 2003 gives every employee 11 national public holidays plus the anniversary day of their province, 12 in all. Matariki became the eleventh national day in 2022. In 2027 the national ones are New Year's Day (Friday 1 January), the day after New Year's Day, Waitangi Day, Good Friday (26 March), Easter Monday (29 March), ANZAC Day, King's Birthday (Monday 7 June), Matariki (Friday 25 June), Labour Day (Monday 25 October), Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
2027 is a kind year for anyone who works Monday to Friday: once the weekend holidays are moved, all 11 land on a weekday, ten of them on a Monday or Friday. Three become four-day weekends: Friday 1 to Monday 4 January, Easter from Friday 26 to Monday 29 March, and Christmas from Saturday 25 to Tuesday 28 December.
Mondayisation: holidays that fall on a weekend
Five 2027 holidays fall on a Saturday or Sunday: the day after New Year's Day (Saturday 2 January), Waitangi Day (Saturday 6 February), ANZAC Day (Sunday 25 April), Christmas Day (Saturday 25 December) and Boxing Day (Sunday 26 December). Under the Holidays Act each is "Mondayised" for anyone who would not otherwise work on that weekend day: the paid holiday moves to Monday 4 January, Monday 8 February, Monday 26 April, Monday 27 December and, because Monday is already taken by Christmas, Tuesday 28 December. Someone who normally works that Saturday or Sunday keeps the holiday on the weekend day instead. Waitangi Day and ANZAC Day have been Mondayised only since 2014; before that a weekend Waitangi or ANZAC Day had no weekday in its place.
Because the right day depends on your roster, the grid and the PDF shade both dates, and the table above lists both, exactly as Employment New Zealand's "Observed date" column gives them. If you work on a public holiday that would otherwise be a working day for you, the Act gives you time and a half for the hours worked plus a paid alternative day off.
Matariki on Friday 25 June 2027
Matariki is the Māori name for the star cluster also called the Pleiades; its reappearance in the pre-dawn sky in midwinter marks the Māori New Year. The public holiday, Te Rā Aro ki a Matariki, is the only one whose dates are written into law in advance: Schedule 1 of Te Kāhui o Matariki Public Holiday Act 2022 lists one date for every year from 2022 to 2052, chosen from the maramataka, the Māori lunar calendar. Each is a Friday, between 20 June and 19 July. The 2027 entry is 25 June 2027; it was 10 July in 2026 and will be 14 July in 2028, so do not reuse last year's date.
Provincial anniversary days
The twelfth holiday is your province's anniversary day. The provinces are the ones of 19th-century New Zealand, not today's regions or council districts, and the day is set by local custom: Employment New Zealand says it is generally the Monday nearest the actual anniversary, with listed exceptions. Its 2027 table gives Wellington Monday 25 January, Auckland and Nelson Monday 1 February, Taranaki Monday 8 March (moved to the second Monday in March to avoid Easter), Otago Monday 22 March, Southland Tuesday 30 March (Easter Tuesday), South Canterbury Monday 27 September (Dominion Day), Hawke's Bay Friday 22 October (the Friday before Labour Day), Marlborough Monday 1 November (the first Monday after Labour Day), Canterbury Friday 12 November (Christchurch Show Day) and Westland and the Chatham Islands Monday 29 November. Pick yours in the Province select under the grid and it is shaded too; ?region=AUK opens the calendar with Auckland's day, ?region=WGN with Wellington's and ?region=CAN with Canterbury's.
2027 school terms and holidays
Tick School holidays under the grid (or open ?sch=1) and the Ministry of Education's 2027 dates for state and state-integrated schools and kura are drawn as a grey hatched band, on screen and in every PDF layout, with each break listed under the calendar and the source named. Term 1 ends on Friday 9 April and the first holidays run from Saturday 10 to Monday 26 April, ANZAC Day's observed Monday being the last day off. Term 2 is Tuesday 27 April to Friday 2 July, Term 3 Monday 19 July to Friday 24 September, and Term 4 starts Monday 11 October. The mid-year holidays are 3 to 18 July and the spring holidays 25 September to 10 October. Terms 2 and 3 are fixed: they are the same for every state school, primary, intermediate and secondary, in Auckland as in Invercargill.
The two ends of the year are not fixed. Each school picks its first day between Thursday 28 January and Wednesday 3 February and its last day no later than Friday 17 December, and secondary schools, which need slightly fewer open days, often finish earlier. So the band covers only the days that are a holiday at every school, 1 to 27 January and from 18 December; your school's own newsletter has its exact first and last days. Easter Tuesday (30 March) is a school holiday but not a public holiday, so it is listed under the grid rather than banded, and schools also close on their province's anniversary day. Private schools set their own terms. School holidays never count as public holidays here: they do not change the holiday shading, the table above or the long-weekend list.
Printing on A4
This page starts on A4, landscape, with weeks starting on Monday, as New Zealand calendars do. Download the PDF and, in the print dialog, choose Actual size or Scale 100%: the sheet is exactly 297 × 210 mm and the year grid stays about 11 mm from every edge, wider than the margin a home printer cannot reach. For a fridge or office calendar choose A month per page in portrait, where each day cell carries the holiday's name and you can add your own photo to each month without it leaving your device. The address keeps your choices, so ?layout=month&orient=portrait opens the monthly version and ?weeks=1 adds ISO week numbers.
Honest limits
The dates were copied once, on 2026-10-14, from Employment New Zealand's 2027 table and from the Matariki Act; if a holiday is added or moved after that, this page lags until it is updated. That table prints ANZAC Day as "Saturday 25 April", but 25 April 2027 is a Sunday; only the day and month are used here, and the Monday 26 April it moves to is unaffected. Anniversary days are the least certain dates: Employment New Zealand says its exceptions are subject to change, Westland's day varies from town to town (Greymouth keeps the one shaded here), and Otago has no single day, so your employment agreement or workplace custom decides. Check with your employer or local council if it matters. Easter Sunday and local show days other than Christchurch's are not marked; school holidays appear only with the School holidays switch, as the Ministry of Education's page gave them on 2026-10-15. The main 2027 calendar maker has the same tool for 18 other countries and regions.
How a long weekend is counted
A long weekend here is any run of three or more days off in a row made only of Saturdays, Sundays and the public holidays this calendar marks for your country (and region, if you pick one). Nothing else counts: a day the source does not list is a working day, no “observed” day is added that the source does not state, and a holiday marked for part of a day only (Queensland’s Christmas Eve, from 6 pm) does not join a run. In England and Wales, Good Friday (26 March 2027) and Easter Monday (29 March) make one four-day run; the other 2027 bank holidays are Mondays, giving three-day weekends, and the substitute days for Christmas make Saturday 25 to Tuesday 28 December four days.
Bridge days are suggestions, not holidays. A bridge day is an ordinary working day between a holiday and a weekend. Take Friday 7 May 2027 off in Germany, after Ascension Day (Christi Himmelfahrt) on Thursday 6 May, and you are off Thursday to Sunday: four days for one day of leave. Two days of leave are listed when they give five or more days off, and three only when they join two weekends — Wednesday 29 to Friday 31 December in England and Wales turn into ten days, Saturday 25 December to Monday 3 January 2028 (the New Year substitute day). A bridge day is never coloured on the grid or in the PDF. Tick Mark long weekends (or add lw=1 to the link) to draw a dashed outline round every run on the sheet and in each PDF layout; month pages also print each run under that month’s holidays.
