Magnifier with light

Read small print through your phone camera: zoom up to 10×, switch on the light, freeze the picture and read it in high contrast.

The camera opens only when you tap Start camera. Nothing is uploaded.

For a leaflet, a receipt, a seed packet or a serial number: hold the phone 10–20 cm above it, zoom, then Freeze and read the still at leisure.

This device offers

Browsers decide which camera features a web page may use, so this list is read from the camera itself once it is open.

    Reading tips

    • Glare on glossy labels: tilt the phone a little so the light does not bounce straight back.
    • Shaky hands: freeze first, then zoom into the still; the still does not shake.
    • Faint grey print (receipts, seed packets): Yellow on black or High contrast, plus Sharpen.
    • Blurry up close: every camera has a closest focus distance; move back until it is sharp, then zoom.

Privacy: the camera picture stays on this device. Frames are drawn and filtered inside this page; nothing is uploaded or stored, and the camera turns off when you tap Stop camera or close the tab. The page sends an anonymous page-view count and two fixed event names (open, freeze), never a picture.

How to read small print with the magnifier

    1. Tap Start camera and allow the camera. On a phone the back camera opens at the highest resolution it offers. Nothing is requested before you tap.
    2. Zoom with the slider, by pinching the picture, or with the mouse wheel. The label says camera zoom when the camera's own zoom is used and digital when the page enlarges the picture.
    3. Tap Light in a dim room. Where the browser shares the phone's torch it switches on; otherwise the screen light turns the screen white.
    4. Tap the picture to focus on the print (where the camera allows it), then Freeze. Rest your hand and read the still: drag along the line, pinch to zoom in further.
    5. Pick a reading filter (high contrast, white on black, yellow on black, greyscale, sharpen) and tap Save PNG to keep the frozen frame on your device.

    What it cannot do

    • Camera zoom, torch and tap to focus work only where the phone and browser give them to web pages. Chrome on most Android phones gives zoom and the torch. Many iPhone browsers give neither, and desktop webcams rarely have them; there the page uses digital zoom and the screen light. This device offers lists what you have.
    • Digital zoom adds no detail. It enlarges the pixels the camera captured: bigger, not sharper. Past about 4× letters become soft blocks; move closer or open a full-resolution photo instead.
    • The screen light cannot light what the back camera sees. It lights what is in front of the screen, so it helps with the front camera or a laptop webcam.
    • A frozen frame is a video frame, usually 1280 × 720 to 3840 × 2160 pixels, not a full camera photo. For the finest detail take a photo with the camera app and open it here with Magnify a photo.
    • It is not a medical or low-vision device and is not a substitute for glasses or a magnifier chosen with an eye-care professional.
    • Keeping the screen awake needs a browser with Screen Wake Lock; elsewhere the phone may dim and lock as usual.

    Questions

Is there a magnifier online with light?

Yes. Tap Light after the camera opens. Where the phone and browser let web pages use the torch (Chrome on most Android phones does), the phone's own light switches on. Where they do not, the page offers a screen light: the whole screen turns white, which lights things in front of the screen, so it helps with the front camera or a laptop webcam but not with a phone's back camera.

Does the magnifier work on iPhone?

Yes, in Safari and the other iPhone browsers: the back camera opens, and digital zoom to 10×, freeze, pan, the reading filters and Save PNG all work. What depends on the iOS version is whether the browser lets web pages use the camera's own zoom and the torch; many iPhone browsers give neither, and then the page uses digital zoom. This device offers lists what you have after you start the camera.

How do I use my phone as a magnifying glass for reading?

Tap Start camera, hold the phone about 10 to 20 cm above the print, zoom with the slider or by pinching, tap Light if it is dim, and tap Freeze when the letters are sharp. Then rest your hand and read the still: drag to move along the line, pinch to zoom, and try Yellow on black or High contrast for faint print.

Can I use the camera online without installing an app?

Yes. This is a web page: the browser asks once for camera permission when you tap Start camera, and nothing is installed. The picture is drawn and filtered inside the page on your device; it is not uploaded or stored, and the camera turns off when you tap Stop camera or close the tab.

Does digital zoom make the text sharper?

No. Digital zoom enlarges the pixels the camera already captured, so it makes text bigger, not sharper. A 1920-pixel-wide picture of a 15 cm wide page has about 13 pixels per millimetre; that reads well at 2× to 4×, and beyond that letters turn into soft blocks. For more detail move the phone closer, use the camera's own zoom where offered, or open a full-resolution photo with Magnify a photo.
