Add a border to a photo
A plain or coloured border, rounded corners, a mat line or an instant-photo frame. Or fit the whole photo into a square, 4:5 or 9:16 without cropping. Up to 20 at once; nothing leaves this device.
Add your photos, then choose a border or a ratio.
Tap the photo to take that colour.

Rounded corners are see-through, which only PNG can store, so the file is a PNG.
Phone photos are turned upright first. EXIF is removed (GPS location, camera, date taken): each file is a new image drawn through a canvas, so no metadata is copied.
Privacy: the photos are framed in your browser and never uploaded. They are opened and drawn inside this page with the browser's own canvas, and are gone when you close the tab. Nothing is stored on this device.
How to add a border or fit a photo without cropping
- Add the photos. Tap Add photos and choose 1 to 20, drop them on the box, or paste a copied picture with Ctrl+V (⌘V on a Mac).
- Border: pick Even, Each side or Instant photo, set the width in % of the photo's short side (so a portrait and a landscape shot get the same look) or in exact pixels, and choose a colour. Pick from photo takes a colour from the picture itself.
- Or fit to a ratio: choose 1:1, 4:5, 9:16, 16:9, 3:2 or your own, and what fills the space: white, black, a colour, a gradient or a blurred copy of the photo.
- Check each photo with ‹ and ›. The settings apply to all of them.
- Download. Keep the original size, or pick 1080 or 2048 px on the long side. JPG for photos; PNG for rounded corners or graphics. One at a time or all in a ZIP.
What the numbers mean
A 4,000 × 3,000 px phone photo with an even 5 % border gets 150 px on each side (5 % of the 3,000 px short side) and becomes 4,300 × 3,300 px. The Instant photo frame keeps 150 px at the top and sides and makes the bottom 3.5 times deeper, 525 px, for 4,300 × 3,675 px: room to write on, like the real prints.
Fitted to 1:1 the same photo becomes 4,000 × 4,000 px with a 500 px band above and below; at 1080 px long side that is a 1,080 × 1,080 file where the photo is 1,080 × 810 and each band is 135 px. Fitted to 4:5 it becomes 4,000 × 5,000. The photo's own pixels are never cropped or stretched.
| Ratio | At 1080 px wide | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 1:1 | 1080 × 1080 | Square feed posts, profile and shop grids |
| 4:5 | 1080 × 1350 | The tallest portrait most social feeds show uncropped |
| 9:16 | 1080 × 1920 | Stories, reels and short videos, phone wallpapers |
| 16:9 | 1920 × 1080 | Video thumbnails, slides, TV screens |
| 3:2 | 1620 × 1080 | Classic 6 × 4 in prints, most camera sensors |
What it cannot do
- No frame artwork. Borders are flat colours, a gradient or the blurred photo; there are no wooden frames, ornaments, stickers or textures.
- A blurred background on a very small photo looks soft. The background is the photo itself scaled up, so a 400 px photo saved at 2048 px has a blurrier, blockier fill than a full-size phone photo, and the photo in the middle is enlarged too.
- A social app may still recompress the upload. The file you save is the size and quality you chose, but most apps re-encode uploads; a 1080 px wide file is what they keep for feed posts, so bigger files gain little there.
- No cropping. It only ever adds space. To cut part of a picture away, use Crop Image.
- Rounded corners need PNG. JPG has no transparency, so the page switches to PNG while corners are rounded; PNG files of photos are several times larger.
- Very large outputs are limited by the browser. Some browsers (iPhone Safari among them) cap a canvas at about 16.7 megapixels; a bigger result is saved smaller and the page says so.
Questions
How do I add a border to a picture online for free?
Open the picture on this page. Border is the default mode: drag Width (5 % of the short side to start), pick a colour with the swatch or Pick from photo, and tap Download this photo. There is no account, no daily limit and no mark of ours on the result, and the work happens in your browser, not on a server.
How do I make a photo square for a social post without cropping it?
Switch to Fit to a ratio and choose 1:1. The canvas becomes as wide as the photo's long side and the whole photo sits in the middle, with bands of white, black, a colour, a gradient or a blurred copy of the photo filling the rest. Set Output size to 1080 px long side for a 1080 × 1080 file, the size square feed posts on Instagram and Facebook are shown at.
How do I fit a photo to 4:5 or 9:16 without cropping?
Choose 4:5 (portrait feed posts, 1080 × 1350) or 9:16 (stories and short videos, 1080 × 1920) under Fit to a ratio. A landscape photo gets bands above and below, a tall one bands at the sides; nothing is cut off. Minimum margin keeps a gap on every side, so even a photo that already has the right shape gets a frame.
How do I add a border to a photo on iPhone?
Open this page in Safari, tap Add photos, then Photo Library, and choose up to 20. Set the border, then tap Download this photo or Download all as ZIP. Safari saves to the Files app (Downloads); open a photo there and tap Share → Save Image to put it in Photos. HEIC photos are opened by Safari itself and saved as JPG or PNG.
How do I add a border to a photo on Android?
Open this page in Chrome, tap Add photos and choose from the gallery or Files (long-press to select several). Set the border or ratio and download. Single photos land in Downloads, where Google Photos also shows them; a ZIP opens with the Files app's Extract button.
